What The Sleep System Parents Say

"I have been carrying out your sleep system for the last three weeks and have great results to report. My baby is now 28 weeks old, sleeping in her own room, without being swaddled and without the dummy."

Reducing the Risk of Cot Death

The advice given here is taken from publications produced jointly by Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSIDS) and the Department of Health.

The key steps parents can take to reduce the risk of cot death are:

  • Place your baby on their back to sleep regardless of whether they are in a cot or pram.
  • Don't smoke while you are pregnant - fathers too!
  • Do not let anyone smoke in the same room as your baby. Don't let anyone smoke in your house.
  • Keep baby's head uncovered - place your baby with their feet to the foot of the cot, to prevent wriggling down under the covers. Better still purchase a baby sleeping bag.
  • Do not let your baby get too hot (or too cold). Use a room thermometer in the baby's bedroom and choose the correct tog of sleeping bag.
  • Do not share a bed with your baby:
    • If you have been drinking alcohol
    • If you take medication or drugs that make you drowsy
    • If you or your partner are smokers (even if you never smoke in bed or in the home)
    • If you feel very tired
    Or if your baby:
    • Was premature (born before 37 weeks)
    • Was low birth weight (less than 2.5kg or 5½ lb)
    • Is under three months old
