Sleepy7686

Very sleepy mummy to a 2 year, 3 month old toddler girl and a 10 week old baby boy. Caleb is dependent on a dummy to get him to sleep but wakes all the time looking for it. This is definitely having its toll on my sleep and really want to wean him from it.

Routine yesterday was:
6.10am wake up and had mobile on in his cot - happy to play until 7am Breast feed.
8.15 to 8.30am nap in swing
10am feed
10.30 to 11.30am nap in pram
1pm feed
2pm to 2.50pm nap in cot
3.30pm feed
4.30p.m to 5pm nap in sling
bedtime routine started at 6.10 and down in cot at 7pm - fell asleep quite quickly.
dream feed at 11pm and another feed at 3.15am but with lots of wakings for dummy over night.

Topic: ditching the dummy today

ditching the dummy today

We have decided to get rid of the dummy starting with the first nap of the day after having so little sleep since Caleb was born. A rough guide to his nap and feeding as under my profile - he does feed pretty much every 3 hours but the nap times are not so set in stone.

So I have 2 questions, we are doing PU/PD/CD method to get rid of dummy.

1. Do we continue the PUPDCD until he falls asleep even if it take him longer than he would normally nap for (eg over an hour) or do we give him an allotted time to fall asleep and if he doesn't then get him up and do something else eg out in the pram?

2. We dream feed at night with the one bottle of the day, is it ok for him to fall asleep and go into cot asleep with this or does he have to be awake?

3. He is in the first part of PUPD at the moment and so far he hasn't actually stopped crying at all for 10minutes so does that mean he should be held for the entire time or would it still work if we put him down even whilst he is crying.

Thanks very much for replying, I have been so worried about getting rid of the dummy as I hate, hate, hate to hear my baby cry but I know it is for his good and ours as he is always so tired (and so are we.)

I would use the pram, the sling and the swing for naps throught he day until he has forgotten about the dummy and pupdcd through the night when he wakes looking for it. This should make it much easier for him in this transition period. Once he has forgotten about it, you can use pupdcd for the naps. If he still hasn't fallen asleep after the 1 hour sleep window, take him for a walk in the pram. It will take a few days before he starts to settle for naps using this method.

Thank you Wendy for getting back to me. So we have completed over 24hours with no dummy and it has been so much better than I thought. It took 53mins the first time with PUPDCD - he fell asleep 3 mins into the 2nd CD and then it took 39mins at bedtime. He briefly made a noise at 1.30 but didn't wake up (we're all in the same room so I can hear everything!) he had his dream feed at 11pm and went down straight away. Then woke at 3.15 for a breast feed. It took about 35mins of chattering afterwards and a little bit of mantra style crying but nothing much at all before going to sleep - I left him the entire time as he never seemed unhappy. Then a single cry at 4.30 before waking at 6.52am happy and ready to play. My husband and I could not believe it. I am sure it won't be like this every night but it was so much better than I thought. I know I can see this through now and felt even though he was crying, the PUPD was the right style for us as I still felt like I was comforting him and helping him get through it. I am sure I'll post again soon with more questions - next step will be sorting out napping in his cot and for longer than 45mins!
