Why does my baby wake crying numerous times each night but goes bk to sleep?
Hi, my 9 month old didnt sleep through the night until he was 6 months and this was after 6 weeks of trying to get him onto a routine and using a sleep technique. Also got rid of dummy. He was sleeping nearly 11 hours at night, Naps took longer to develop was only sleeping for 45 mins. Morning nap developed first to an hour. Afternoon nap varied.
He was doing well until he became ill 5 weeks ago with the measles and we spent 3 nights in hospital with him. Routine messed up and after two hard weeks of using a sleep technique we have him back on his routine again. He is sleeping from an hour to an hour and a half in the morning but only 30 to 40 mins in the afternoon. we have a good bedtime routine and he goes down most nights without crying,However he wakes anything from 40 mins to an hour after he goes down. We leave him for 10 mins and most of the time he goes back to sleep himself after 5 mins of crying ( not hard crying). This may happen again an hour later and 2 or 3 times during the night. My question is , are these wakings my baby learning to self settle? Or are they because hes not getting enough sleep during the day? Has it anything to do with sleep cycles? Will they get more frequent?

If you stay consistent over the next few nights, the short wakings and grumbling should decrease and finally stop and he should start to settle much quicker at bedtime again. It sounds like he is getting back into the habit of re-settling after his recent traumatic illness.

Thankyou. Woke 6 times Sun. night went back to sleep himself within 5 mins until 4 and then he was awake for nearly an hour. Monday night he woke twice and went back himself. He woke once last night. So hes improving thankfully. will keep posted. Does teething really affect a baby's sleep?

Sounds like things are getting better. If babies are in a good routine, they may have a few dodgy days when they are teething but then go back to normal e.g when teething, my little girl would wake up early for a few days then she would be fine. If you think he is teething, use calpol according to the dosage with a dose before bedtime.
