toddler naps

My 2.5 year old still has a nap in the afternoon but lately she's often very upset when she wakes up. She used to sleep for 3 hours or more in the afternoon (and still go to bed ok at night!) but when the getting upset started we decided to try cutting down the length of the nap to see if that helped. We tend to only let her sleep for 1.5 - 2 hours now but she still often gets upset on being woken. We tried cutting the nap out altogether for a week but she got too tired so still seems to need it. Is there anything else we can try?

I've found this with my own little girl - it's as if she's going into a much deeper sleep now & waking up is a bit of a shock. If she's going off well at bedtime & sleeping through til 6am or later at night there's no need to shorten her nap. Try having a quiet gentle time when she wakes up, maybe look at a book together or sing a song before you open the curtains - sort of the opposite to winding down! My littl girl also likes a drink of milk when she first wakes.

Keep us posted.
