Dawn and Jack (17 Weeks)
Dawn and her little boy Jack live in Thurrock, Essex. Jack was a great sleeper
when he was a new born. He slept from 11pm through to 7:00am from around 4 weeks to
two months old. At that point he began to wake at least once during the night and
was difficult to settle. When he was 17 weeks old his mum bought
The Baby Sleep System.
Jack had a number of sleep issues that needed addressing. He didn't take
regular naps and the ones he had were short. He was very dependent on his dummy and
got very upset if it was taken away from him or it fell out in the night. He was
still sleeping in a moses basket so that mum and dad could comfort him during the
night, but was outgrowing it. Finally he cried hysterically when he was put in his
cot whether at bedtime or his regular waking time of 2:30am.
The Strategy
Dawn was helped to go right back to basics. We devised a routine that gave Jack
enough long naps and fitted around his 3 year old sister's pre school activities.
We decided that Jack would not respond well to cry it out techniques and Dawn
did not feel comfortable using this approach as Jack was still not 6 months old.
After a little trial and error she used a unique combination of the strategies
suggested in the book.
The Result
After several weeks of daily support forum posts Jack started to make steady improvements with his day and night time sleep. As Dawn reports:
"Quick update - Jack still sleeping through the night -
obviously does wake up during, but I don't really hear him and resettles
himself. Last night was 7:15pm through to 7:20am - dream feed at 10:30pm.
He did wake at about 6:30am but played with teddies, put them on his
head and went back to sleep. Nearly a week now I think with no having
to get up to him. So going great guns!!!
Definitely recommending your website, without you, I think
I would still be struggling. Your straight/tough talking helped me to carry on,
as did the support from others on the forum.
Thanks
Dawn"
